This device is a dual-mode usb stick that has a usb storage and a wireless adapter.

Bus 001 Device 007: ID 1307:0169 Transcend Information, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 008: ID 1307:1169 Transcend Information, Inc. TS2GJF210 JetFlash 210 2GB

As pointed out in this following post, it doesn't detect/show the wireless adapter part.

FYI, this is what I can see when booting from Linux Mint.

Here is the vendor/product ID from Linux Wireless.

Could someone fix this issue? Thank you!

usb_modeswitch will not be supported under OE. not soon. throw the stick away and get a better one :)

commented Nov 24, 2013

@stefansaraev pseudo usb_modeswitch is already supported for some ~2 years for the Netgear WNDA3200. All we need to do on that device is detect it in a udev rule and 'eject' the /dev/sr0 fake CDROM (flash) device to flip the NIC into wireless mode.

e.g. https://github.com/OpenELEC/OpenELEC.tv/blob/1f503ece3a6ec4130771000e11113eb0b6e16a79/packages/linux/udev.d/40-modeswitch.rules

@billpense - please copy that file to /storage/.config/udev.rules.d/41-usb-modeswitch.rules and then edit to contain the vendor and product IDs for your device, then reboot to see if it works. If yes, report back and we can commit a simple change to the existing rule.

commented Nov 24, 2013

humm is it that simple? good. hope it works

commented Nov 24, 2013

@stefansaraev yup, I've got another cheap 150n adapter (http://www.premiertek.net/products/networking/PL-5370N.html) with RT5370 and it works like a charm:

  • Bus 001 Device 003: ID 148f:5370 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT5370 Wireless Adapter

@chewitt Thank you very much! I didn't know those files from /storage/.config can be used for overriding settings. Unfortunately, even with /storage/.config/udev.rules.d/41-usb-modeswitch.rules (idVendor=1377, idProduct=1169), it didn't eject the usb storage.

On this hardware, the usb storage part is detected at /dev/sdc1 and mounted at /var/media/USB DISK. When I manually eject/unmount this from XBMC or SSH, it doesn't automagically detect the wireless adapter either. If I trigger the re-scan (udevadm trigger), the same usb storage is attached once again..

I need to build another OpenElec machine, and I hope there is a simple fix for this issue.

then it is mass-storage not virtual cd and 'eject' method will not work. needs usb_modeswitch.

commented Nov 24, 2013

I'm closing the ticket as full usb_modeswitch is not something we're going to support. OE supports a broad ranges of low-cost wireless devices without needing it (and the dev team have a low opinion of wireless devices). NB: have a google and see if Cisco offers a Windows utility app for disabling the flash device. I've seen other vendors offer that kind of thing for their devices.

commented Nov 24, 2013

however. usb_modeswitch is something I consider for unofficial addon repository. it will be possible using the binary + custom udev rules. adding it to my TODO list.

commented Nov 24, 2013

@stefansaraev Cool.

@chewitt I'll check out if there is a utility to disable the storage. This could be more practical.

Really impressed by quick and precise advice from both of you. Thanks again.

commented Dec 1, 2013

just to let you know: usb_modeswitch is now in our unofficial repository (for OE 4.0). you can drop own udev rules in .config/udev.rules.d. make sure you use FULL path to the usb_modeswitch binary.

@stefansaraev Awesome! Thanks again.
